On the eve of 2013, STX France shipyard announced the signing of a contract with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line owner for the construction of a steamer type Oasis. In its statement, STX mentions that this is “one of the largest ships ever built in Saint-Nazaire”. In addition to this agreement, the shipyards of Saint-Nazaire continue the strategic diversification of their industrial position, especially forming alliances for the production of marine wind generators.
The construction of this giant of the seas, the largest of all time passenger vessels, should begin in September 2013. This involves 10 million hours of work, spread over three years, for the Atlantic STX shipyards and their subcontractors. With a length of 361 meters, a maximum width of 66 meters (47 feet on the waterline) and a height of 72 metres (20 bridges, 16 reserved for passengers), this building will have a capacity of 227.700 GT (gross capacity tons) and 2700 cabins.
It will carry 8 460 people including 6 360 passengers. It outclasses the largest ships made so far in Saint-Nazaire, like the Queen Mary 2 (345 m long) and will seek improvements that facilitate a significant reduction of energy consumption and environmental impact.
The delivery is scheduled in the course of the year 2016; an option on a second ship to be delivered in 2018 has also been raised by the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Group.
French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault welcomed the signing of this contract as it “Reflects excellence of the French expertise in shipbuilding”.
Joël Batteux and Patrick Rimbert, respectively Mayor of Saint-Nazaire and Nantes, founding members of CAAC, considered that “this command gives confidence in the future and it is a positive sign sent to all stakeholders of our territories in the Atlantic Arc”.
