On Wednesday 8th, at 9:00 in the Niemeyer Center (multipurpose room) the Mayor of Avilés, Ms. Pilar Varela, opened the day of good practice for the project KNOWCITIES – CITIES OF KNOWLEDGE OF ATLANTIC ARC, with various presentations of examples of networking and public policy based on knowledge and innovation.
Jorge Manrique, EU projects coordinator explained the works of the Know Cities project, leaving the floor to several stakeholders that presented Avilés as a compact territory. For instance, from the Welfare department the idea of networking is key to face the depth of social transformation, thus justifying programmes as AVILES AVANZA on social issues or a participatory approach to the local budget. In addition, the Council presented the inclusion of social employment clauses in public procurement, endeavor that has been recognized at local level (Fundación ONCE) and EU level (Prize for Innovative Public Administrations, runner-up).
There were also presentations in fundamental matters such as housing and women’s entrepreneurship. In this sense, after a dynamic presentation, the entity of Brittany region “Entrepreneurship in female” met the School of Asturian Business Women Entrepreneurs.
The programme was completed with visits to the research and development departments of Arcelor-Mittal and ITMA and the Cultural Factory Aviles; examples of projects for artistic entrepreneurs and the audiovisual cluster of Asturias.
In addition, during these days and in the framework of the 10th anniversary of their twinning, a delegation Saint-Nazaire/Nantes area met with the Mayor of Avilés, and held contacts with representatives of local and regional industry, ports and administration of the Principality of Asturias, aiming to the establishment of collaborations in several areas.
