Lisbon Named Leading City Break Destination for 2013

Last week, the World Travel Awards named Lisbon, Portugal as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination for 2013. The city also earned the recognition in 2009 and 2010, and beat out notable cities like Dublin, Istanbul, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome and Venice to take the title for the third time.

So what makes Lisbon special? Plenty. We took a look at the city’s hospitality options back in February, noting the combination of historic palace hotels and newer properties like the Altis Belem Hotel & Spa…which, in keeping with the city’s theme of contrasts, is located in between two historic buildings.

Portugal has become especially popular for the river cruise market, and several lines visit the capital city as part of their tours. AmaWaterways’ Enticing Douro itinerary begins with three nights in Lisbon, while Viking Cruises’ Hemming and Torgil sail a 10-night River of Gold cruise that include two nights in Lisbon. The upcoming ocean-faring Viking Star will also dock in Lisbon when it launches in 2015.
