Last October 26, 2012, the Secretariat of the Conference of Atlantic Arc cities sent the monthly newsletter with the open European calls. Among them was the European Award for Innovation in Public Administration. Seven months later, we are pleased to announce that Avilés, member city of CAAC and President of the Commission of Cohesive and Attractive cities, is one of the runners-up. Avilés is in competition with projects of Helsinki (Finland), Haut-Rhin (France), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Stockholm (Sweden) and Islington in London. Also, the price ceremony will take place in another city of CAAC: the Irish city of Cork, in June 6th, in the context of the European week of innovative regions.
This initiative aims to promote the initiatives of the different administrations in Europe. The City Council of Avilés was selected as a finalist in the category “Citizens” for the Initiative” CONTRASTS: Social commitment in the territory of Avilés”, for the implementation and development of the internal rules for the integration of social criteria in public procurement of the Town Hall. The prize winners for innovation in public administration are selected on the basis of four criteria: economic impact of their initiative, their relevance against the challenges faced by society, originality and ease of replication idea, and how it is intended to use the prize money.
