Gijón has been designated as European City of Sport 2016 after the visit of the delegation from ACES Europe last August.
The European Capital, City, Community and Villa of sports awards are delivered annually since 2001 by the Association of European Cities for Sport (ACES Europe), a private entity non-profit with headquarters in Brussels and ties with the European Parliament.
The Evaluation Committee visited the city from 23 to 25 August, coinciding with the start of the CSIO 2015 and the first Real Sporting League match in its return to the first division. The sports infrastructures, associations, events, programs developed for the promotion of sport, accessibility, policies aimed at the integration of people with disabilities, etc., are some of the aspects that have been taken into account in the final assessment.
The award-winning cities should launch in 2016 a calendar of events in order to promote health through physical activity and the integration of the most disadvantaged.
