The eighteen parks and more than 40,000 trees in Cherbourg-Octeville obtained the French national label EcoJardin, an award that recognizes the exemplary policy of Cherbourg -Octeville in preserving the environment. Before, the city had received four stars in the competition of cities and villages in bloom.
With more than ten labeled sites each, the Atlantic cities of Bordeaux and Cherbourg -Octeville are the only two cities that have undertaken a process of labeling all of their green spaces and landscaping. The city of Nantes has also received this certification.
Established in 2012, the label EcoJardin aims to encourage urban management practices which are respectful of the environment. This label values the work of city gardeners and it educates users on issues of sustainable development and the environmental practices of green spaces. Valid for three years, this label is awarded on the basis of an assessment by independent auditors.
