Defending a sustainable fishing industry both environmentally and especially socially and economically is the premise that created the Foundation for Social and Sustainable Minimum Performance ( Fremss ) that integrates in its board representatives from major Galician institutions as the Xunta, the Port Authority, the city of a Coruña and the University , as well as professional fields related to fishing such as the Lonja.

The FREMSS wants to address to EU authorities a message stressing  the need to “balance” the fishery policy, so as “to ensure a balance between environmental and social sustainability that allows maintaining the fisheries sector today and in the future” as described by its president , Severino Ares.

Thus, 6 and November 7 in A Coruña there will be held the First Congress of Social and Economic Sustainability of the Fisheries Sector , in Palexco . This international meeting will feature four panel discussions which will involve EU leading figures in business, science , management and society related to the fisheries sector .
