The Portuguese city of Lisbon won the European Green Capital Award 2020. This title was awarded by the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, at an awards ceremony in Nijmegen, in the Countries Low, the current European Green Capital.

The European Green Capital Award is an award that recognizes the cities that best deal with the environment and the living environment of its inhabitants. The jury considered that Lisbon, which began its path towards sustainability during a period of economic crisis, can be an inspiration and a model for many cities in the EU. This clearly shows that sustainability and economic growth go hand to hand.

In addition, Brest, president of the Ocean Thematic Commission, will host the European Maritime Observatory. Due to the Brexit, the Maritime Security Center for the Horn of Africa moves its headquarters from Northwood, in the United Kingdom, to Brest.

This proposal received the agreement of the European Defense Ministers in Luxembourg and will be confirmed by the Council in July. The MSC-HOA (Marine Safety Center – Horn of Africa) provides 24-hour surveillance of maritime traffic in the Gulf of Aden.
