Since mid-2013, the city of Santiago de Compostela with its University are partners of PLEEC Project, funded by the Seventh Framework Programme from the European Commission. The project is part of the call FP7-ENERGY-SMARTCITIES-2012 and in the evaluation section of municipal plans and sustainable strategic planning.

PLEEC focuses on developing a global perspective using the method applied by the EU to classify SMART CITIES by 6 functions, 31 factors and 74 indicators developed by the three universities involved in the project. Those functions are: the economy, mobility, environment, citizens, quality of life and governance.

The project objective is to obtain a tool to save and achieve energy efficiency in European cities by connecting them to qualified centers of innovation in the energy sector within the participating cities.
