The project that has made San Sebastian designated as European Capital of Culture 2016 invites you on a journey towards coexistence, designed after a “broad and pluralistic participatory process,” which pursues the social commitment to human rights, education in values and creativity.

Under the theme “Waves of citizen power”, San Sebastián has managed to convince the jury with a project entitled “Culture of Coexistence”. San Sebastian’s proposal considered that being European Capital of Culture is an opportunity to “strengthen the social commitment to human rights and civic upraising against any form of exclusion and violence” and to “move towards a climate of civic consensus so as to set the emotional architecture of the future.»

The official opening of the events will be January 20, coinciding with the patron saint’s day of the city, where 9,000 children from across Europe will inaugurate a twelve-month cultural festival with the beating of drums and barrels in a tamborrada . San Sebastian will launch “roving embassies” all around Europe; in a boat (replica of a ship of the fifteenth century) who undertakes a journey across the Atlantic Arc, a cross-border train crossing the European continent, a circus tent that will tour and a mobile office to gather input and suggestions.
