Atlantic Cities’ Green Cars: an overview

In 2008 the Atlantic Cities signed a Charter on Sustainable development, known as the San Sebastian Charter. In its first chapter, CAAC mayors engaged to “develop efficient public transport and “soft” transport modes”. But, how are CAAC cities doing in 2013?

In the Iberian peninsula, many examples can be quoted. The Science and Technology Park of Gijón has launched a service of ‘car sharing’ of electric vehicles that will be used by employees of the Park’s member companies. The University of A Coruña has installed charging points for electric vehicles in both campuses:  Zapateira and Ferrol. Points that also exist in Santiago de Compostela. The city of Seville has approved a measure by which electric cars can circulate on the  bus lane without being fined. The number of hybrid taxis in the district of Avilés has reached over twenty percent of the fleet, while Lisbon is also keenly interested in the influence of these vehicles in the performance of the taxi service. Furthermore, Donostia-San Sebastian has created a network of electric cars for hourly rental. In addition, Santander has unveiled an Electric Mobility Plan (2012-2015), consisting of 25 measures, which seeks to increase the use of electric vehicles in the city.

In Ireland, Cork is involved in Green e-motion, an initiative aiming to create a unique and user-friendly framework for green electromobility in the EU. Besides, Western France is also doing well. With Mobili’volt, Angoulême has launched a car-sharing service based on electric vehicles in self-service in 2012. Rennes has, since the summer of 2012, increased its fleet with ten electric cars. Likewise, it is in Nantes were these cars get prettier, with results like Cityjoule or Mia. Diverse applications can be thought of,  and thus Lorient is a test site for the Mobile Dream, an all-terrain electric wheelchair. For its part, the agglomeration community of La Rochelle was recently awarded the “Territoria “ price for its “Cyber Car”, an electric vehicle without a driver developed by INRIA.
