CAAC is currently looking for Comics’ Festivals in the Atlantic Area. Should you know about, please send us an e-mail to headquarters (a) atlanticcities.eu. By the moment, three main festivals have been identified:
The Angoulême International Comics Festival (French: Festival international de la bande dessinée d’Angoulême) is the largest comics festival in Europe, and the second biggest in the world after the Comiket. It has occurred every year since 1974 in Angoulême, France, in the month of January. More than 200 000 visitors come each year to the fair, including between 6 000 and 7 000 professionals and 800 journalists. The four-day festival is notable for awarding several prestigious prizes in cartooning.
The Comic and Youth Book Festival of Cherbourg was born in 1987 , unifying the will of a departmental inspector of Education. Then the players have formed an association in 1990 to establish a strong partnership between the institutions involved in the organization, and to assign each role both specific and complementary. The activities of the association obviously affect children’s books , but it also opens the cartoon for the youth, a booming sector. The festival takes place the last week of May each year.
“Viñetas desde o Atlántico” is held annually in August in A Coruña since 1998. The broad set of exhibitions, visiting artists and lectures and conferences intend to give the widest possible view of the world of comics at an international level. These cultural activities are complemented by a fair of eminent booksellers and publishers. There are also presentations of new publications and recreational activities. During the comic festival week Corunna dresses and all life in the city is spread the spirit of the cartoon. The emblem is the Tower of Hercules, the world’s oldest lighthouse in operation, a World Heritage Site.
