CAAC General Assembly 2011

At Niort (France) the 2011 General Assembly of the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities was hosted by AIRE 198, the network of towns and cities chief towns of Poitou-Charentes (France), associating Poitiers, Niort, La Rochelle and Angoulême. The event, held June 30 and July 1, counted on the presence of members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and personalities of the Atlantic area.

“Cities Networking: fostering cohesion” was the theme of the XII General Assembly during which the CAAC presented a paper on the urban dimension of macro-regions. Similarly, the conclusions of the meetings will be used to draft a policy position paper to highlight the role of city networks as producers of synergies that foster social, economic and territorial cohesion. The CAAC is currently chairing the CONFERENCE OF EUROPEAN CROSS-BORDER AND INTERREGIONAL CITY NETWORKS – CECICN which includes six networks and more than 500 cities.

CAAC, chaired by Philippe Duron, Mayor of Caen, considers it necessary to make a step forward and define a framework for cities located in areas that have these specific geographical features. The future of cohesion policy should not only consider the urban issue, but also enable local entities to create, improve and take advantage of instruments that associations provide.
