Created in 2000, the “Atlantic Cities” association is a European association representing the interests and initiatives of local authorities (cities, metropolises, provinces…) in the western part of Europe, also known as the “Atlantic Arc” (western part of France/United Kingdom, northern Spain, the Canary Islands and the whole of Ireland and Portugal). It now includes more than 355 municipalities and 4.5 million inhabitants of the European Atlantic seaboard.

Its objectives are twofold: to defend the interests of Atlantic local authorities and to facilitate joint projects on a European scale. Based in Rennes, it is today a representative organisation:

  1. The only network of local authorities in the Atlantic Arc
  2. An expert to the European institutions
  3. Composed by local authorities of all sizes and shapes
  4. Founding member of C4C (“Cities for Cooperation”)

The association has recently adopted a strategic action plan based on four priorities: blue growth / social dimension / research and innovation / environment. It also has three flagship projects: “Recovery” response to the COVID and Brexit crises / Atlantic macro-region and urban agenda / Stella Atlantis, visibility and promotion of the culture, heritage and attractiveness of the Atlantic territories.

Within the framework of the Atlantic Futures programme, the association regularly opens places for young trainees interested in the international/ European field.
