In the framework of the 2019 European Heritage Days, the City of Gijón, founder of Atlantic Cities network, joined the first celebration of the European Day of the Camino de Santiago from the 19th to the 20th of October 2019.
The City Council of Gijón showcased the Northern Route’s main monuments and its St James’ heritage, as it crossed the city from East to West. Several activities were organized, such as conferences, concerts and a cleaning walk on a section of the path. This initiative seeks to explain and raise their awareness among citizens about the value and the necessity to protect this pilgrimage site which was recognized in 2015 as UNESCO World Heritage.
Information Days on the way of St James were also organized simultaneously in other European regions in six countries (Portugal, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Lithuania).
For its 20th anniversary in 2020, the Atlantic Cities network is organizing a promotional initiative of the Atlantic paths of Santiago, called Stella Atlantis. If you want to know more about the initiatives linked to the pilgrims routes, do not hesitate to contact our secretariat.
