With its new « Agenda do Mar », Viana do Castelo asserts itself as a leading city in blue growth strategies. According to the plan, the city will benefit from a 500 million euros investment in the maritime sector, which will lead to the direct creation of a thousand qualified jobs. The funds will come from private and public investors, particularly the Plan de Recuperação e Resiliência, which is Portugal’s Covid-19 recuperation plan.
Viana do Castelo Mayor, José Maria Costa, President of Atlantic Cities and Vice-President of the Committee of the Regions, has always shown his deep interest into blue growth and maritime affairs. Blue Growth is indeed an important axis of ACA Strategic Plan which underlines it as one of its four priorities. Atlantic Cities also initiated several projects such as She4Sea, for the promotion of women in Maritime Affairs, or events like the Maritime Skills and Jobs Working Groups.
It is thanks to this type of measures that our cities assert their influence in the Atlantic Arc. In fact, Viana Do Castelo is already greatly involved in Maritime Affairs and the Atlantic Arc development, as it was designated Atlantic City of the Year 2018, our yearly competition. As a matter of fact, the competition is currently running to designate the next “Atlantic Heritage City”.
