Equal opportunities is among the five topics described as a development factor by the study on the future strategy of the Atlantic Cities 2020-2030, in order to contribute to the implementation of European policies in favour of the progress of the Atlantic Arc.

The OCDE Local Development annual Forum held in Antwerp (Belgium) on 10th to 11th December 2019, was focused on “Right Skills, Right Jobs, Right Places”.

At this event Atlantic Cities was glad to count with two key participants: its President and Mayor of Viana do Castelo (Portugal), José María Costa, and Cork City Council, represented by Denis Barrett.

José María Costa took part in the workshop dedicated to Cultivating successful entrepreneurs for local innovation and jobs creation. At this workshop, he presented the Intergenerational programme launched by the municipality of Viana do Castelo (Portugal). This programme includes people of all ages in social innovation. On the one hand, it attracts young professionals to develop innovative tools for the silver economy. On the other, it fosters intergenerational exchanges, so experience remains a key asset for economy and society.

Denis Barret presented the initiative Cork Lifelong Learning Festival Every year the event gathers activities as diverse as musical performances, exercise classes, walking tours, historical talks, science lessons, cookery demonstrations, art exhibitions and craft demonstrations and all for free! As a learning city, Cork combines public and private funding for the festival, which was recognised in 2017 by the UNESCO as an innovative practice. It is today being replicated all around the world.

Since 2018, Atlantic Cities has been working on a talent programme called Atlantic Futures, intended to use EU skills as a career development tool for young people and cities’ civil servants.
