As we were preparing for the European Maritime Day in Cork, Atlantic Cities received the invitation from the European Commission to discuss about the new Atlantic Action Plan currently undergoing discussion at the European Institutions.
Jose Maria Costa, ACA president and Mayor of Viana do Castelo is invited to speak at a key session together with DG MARE and other stakeholders on May 15th between 11:30 – 13:00. He is also member of the Committee of the Regions.
The session is called Ports as Blue Economy accelerators. Much of the economic activity in maritime areas is centred around ports and includes activities such as logistics, fisheries, shipping and building and related services, renewable energies, marine research and technologies, tourism, maritime surveillance and security. In this context, ports play a role as a hub and accelerator for various types of innovative activities. This thematic workshop aims to discuss the increasing role of ports as blue economy hubs beyond providing traditional services linked to shipping and logistics. Furthermore, this workshop will promote a new EMFF call for supporting a blue accelerator scheme for Atlantic ports, which is one of the actions put forward by the Atlantic Action Plan.
UPDATE AUGUST 2020: As the European Maritime Day was cancelled, the session will now take place inside the European Week of Regions and Cities, on October 21st, in the session “A new approach to the Atlantic Strategy”.
